Creative Collaboration on the West Bank: Altered Esthetics & Kit Leffler at the Southern Theater
Along with the launch of Southern Theater’s groundbreaking ARTshare program comes another creative collaboration: The Southern has opened it’s doors to host exhibition with Altered Esthetics, a nonprofit community arts org. In conjunction with the opening of new performances from ARTshare’s resident companies, Altered Esthetics has put together a variety of exhibitions throughout 2015, including a summer film festival.
March’s partnership features new work from artist Kit Leffler in her exhibit: ˈēɡō
ˈēɡō opens on Saturday, March 14th, in conjunction with Savage Umbrella’s opening performance of These are the Men. The opening reception for Kit Leffler will be held 5:30 – 7 pm at the Southern Theater, and the show will run until March 29th.
Taking inspiration from her occupation in a science laboratory at the University of Minnesota, Leffler asks the viewer to consider “self” through playful illustrations of personal iconography. Themes in the work are inspired by the writings of Mary Roach, the illustrations of Andreas Vesalius, and Leffler’s own experience with anxiety disorder. Through this visual analysis Leffler creates a world in which the nuance and indefinable essence of self can be analyzed candidly and with oblique humor.
Kit Leffler received her MFA from Edinburgh College of Art. In 2014, she was one of 8 artists who participated in Ae’s Solo Exhibitions Program, and her work Minneapolis3 was featured during Northern Spark.
The Southern Theater’s mission is to foster a community of exceptional artists. It’s fantastic to watch this mission in action as they work with a variety of creative organizations – from theaters to visual artists – all at incredibly accessible price points for viewers, especially through ARTshare membership.
