If you’re a music lover looking for something fun to do that will also support the local art community then head over to The Cedar Cultural Center February 3rd & 4th, 2017 for the sixth annual Cedar Commissions performances!
Funded by a grant from the Jerome Foundation, the Cedar Commissions takes place over two evenings and features new works by a variety of emerging artists. This year’s artists infuse a range of musical styles, and genres that span the globe, while exploring themes that shift through history and time.
On February 3rd, choral composer and soprano vocalist Bethany Battafarano teams up with Peruvian poet Helmut Jerí Pabón and Chilean musicians Vladimir Garrido and Nicolas Muñoz in an exploration of Western classical and Latin American music with a focus on choral and Andean roots.
Composer and vocalist ritika gangly explores the musical nature of literature spanning from 19th century Bengal to contemporary New Delhi to Victorian England to 20th century Chile drawing influence from the Baul heritage of Bengali music, North Indian music, and Neo Soul.

And composer Dameun Strange, founder of Strange New Music Experiment, presents his afrofuturistic conceptual operetta Helianthus which follows Strange as he travels through time visiting his matriarchal ancestors.
On February 4th, composer and tabla player Krissy Bergmark, along with dancer Lauren Baker, will present a “compositional conversation” in a three movement piece for tabla, cello, electric guitar, fiddle, and dancer.
Composer and percussionist Zack Baltich Music, accompanied by Reese Kling on drum set and Carley Olsen on bass clarinet, will present ingress/passage, a piece that uses contact microphones and uncommon performance techniques on marimba, glass bottles, and other found objects, to create alternative textural possibilities.
MC SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE and cellist Eric Silva Brenneman, will present their work Flow and the Bow, an experiment with hip-hop and classical music, exploring the dynamics between “one cello and a microphone.”
